Colon Cancer incidence is on the rise due to affluent dietary habits and sedentary lifestyle. The disease has a established relation to dietary factors. High fiber diet has been identified to protect against colon cancer. High fiber diet is thught to exert it’s protective influence by these mechanisms – increasing the stool bulk, diluting toxins, and reducing colonic transit time and thus reducing the exposure time to fecal carcinogens.
Various other dietary factors also have been proposed to influence the incidence of colon cancer. They are:-
Animal Fat:
Diet high in animal fats such as red meat and processed meat increases the risk of colon cancer.
A diet high in PUFA increases the risk of colorectal cancer while a diet high in oleic acid does not increase the risk.
Consumption of fish (fresh, canned, salted and smoked fish) decreases the risk by virtue of the presence of omega-3-fatty acids.
Consumption of Chicken has so far found no influence on the incidence of Colon Cancer.
Others:
Consumption of alcohol increases the risk while ingestion of calcium, selenium, vitamin A,C & E, carotenoids, and plant phenols decrease the risk of colon cancer.
High calorie diet coupled with physical inactivity leads to excess weight gain and insulin resistance which further increases levels of insulin and IGF-1, which appears to stimulate proliferation of intestinal mucosa.
Aspirin and other NSAIDs have found to be protective with protective effect related to duration.
Other substances found to have chemopreventive action are
Oral folic acid supplementation
Oral Calcium Supplementation
Estrogen replacement therapy
