Diuretics are drugs that increase the urine volume.Diuretics are classified based on their efficacy as
1.High Ceiling Diuretics
2.Medium Ceiling Diuretics
3.Low Ceiling Diuretics
Furosemide, torsemide, bumetanide, ethacrynic acid, axosemide, piretanide, tripamide, mersalyl also known as loop diuretics due to action on Sodium Potassium Chloride symporter of ascending limb of loop of Henle are the most potent group of diuretics
Osmotic diuretics like mannitol, glycerol, urea, isosorbide act at proximal tubule and loop of Henle are classified under high ceiling diuretics.
Thiazides like bendroflumethiazide, chlorthiazide, hydrochlorthiazide, methidothiazide, polythiazide, trichlormethiazide benzthiazide, hydroflumethiazide and thiazide like diuretics – chlorthalidone, metolazone, quinethaelone are medium ceiling diuretics.
Epithelial sodium channel inhibitors like amiloride, triamterene and aldosterone antagonists like spironolactone, canrenone, potassium canreonate and eplerenone with potassium sparing ability are low ceiling diuretics.
CA inhibitors like acetazolamide, dichlorphenamide, methazolamide act at proximal tubule and are low ceiling diuretics
