The machine that measures the depolarization signal is called an electrocardiograph (electro—electrical;
cardio—heart; graph—writing). The electrocardiograph, or ECG machine, picks up the signal
delivered by depolarizing cardiac cells. Normally the conduction system uses only a small number of
cells, so its signal is too faint to be recorded by our external ECG machine.
The term ECG is an Americanized version of the real term, EKG. You see,
most of the original development in the field of electrocardiography came
from Germany and the Netherlands. In these countries, the hard “K”
sound in electrocardiography, is represented by a “K”, not a “C”, thus the
term EKG.
But the machine records activity when large areas of the heart are depolarizing at the same time. That’s
how we map the pathway of the depolarization signal—not by the actual path but by the timing of the
results. Therefore, the ECG machine doesn’t directly measure the transmission of the signal through the
heart but tells us which area of the heart is depolarized and (hopefully) contracting.
