As the name suggests, hypoxic ischaemic ischaemic encephalopathy is due to the perinatal insult to the fetus from asphyxia. The degree of hypoxia when it exceed the level which the fetal brain can bear leads to HIE.
The obstericians are to blame when there is HIE. The recent advances have largely reduced the incidence of ischaemic encephalopathy but haven’t completely abolished them.
The fetus is at risk of seizures and is promptly admitted to Neonatal Intensive Care Unit(NICU).
