Persistent supression of bacterial growth after limited exposure to an antimicrobial is known as post antibiotic effect.
The mechanism of post-antibiotic efect is thought to be one or all of these,
1.Slow recovery of organisms after non-lethal damage to cell structures.
2.persistence of drug at binding site within periplasmic space.
3.Need to synthesize new enzymes before growth resumes.
An interesting observation was made during assessment of post antibiotic effect in vitro and in vivo. In vivo PAE is usually longer than in vitro PAE due to post antibiotic leukocyte enhancement and exposure of bacteria to sub-inhibitory antibiotic concentrations.
