The term Tennis elbow has been popular as many celebrities sports people have been suffering from this condition at some time of their career.
What is Tennis Elbow ?
Tennis elbow is the layman term for Lateral epicondylitis. Lateral epicondyle serves as an attachment for the extensor tendons and the extensor aponeurosis, the covering of the extensor tendons.
Sports men not just tennis players experience lateral epicondylitis. It is due to the tears in the aponurosis caused by repeated resisted contractions of muscles as in lifting weight, using screw driver, playing certain cricket shots, backhand tennis shot etc.
Symptoms Of Tennis Elbow:
The pain is present over the lateral aspect of the elbow the pain may radiate to fore arm and dorsum of the wrist.
The pain may be aggravated by simple routine activities like shaking hands, opening a lock etc.
Treatment Of Tennis Elbow:
People with tennis elbow often get relief with just rest and few days on apin killers(NSAID’s are preferable).Massage and Ice packs may also help. Severe pain is managed by local injection of Steroids at the site of pain.
A fore arm band worn one to two inches reduces stress at the lateral epicondyle and protects from small tears that cause pain. You might have noticed popular sports for instance Sachin Tendulkar wearing a similar band to protect from further damage.
In persons with persistent pain not responding to steroid injection, a release of extensor aponeurosis may be necessary. It is this surgery Sachin underwent for his persistent tennis elbow.
